If you thought with the demise of Spitting Image we’d seen the last of potty-mouthed puppets, then think again.
And any sense that Mongrels was just a comedy about loveable animals is dispensed in seconds, when you settle back to watch the adventures of Vince, Nelson, Destiny and co. The fact they live in an inner-city backyard and not in the country should be a sign that all is far from cuddly. All life is here, with the animals experiencing the same problems as us.
Meet Nelson a metrosexual fox who hasn’t had his first sexual experience and Destiny a pedigree Afghan 'it-bitch', who says she wants fame, but really just wants to be loved (ahhh!). Then there’s Kali, a deeply cynical pigeon who accidentally finds lady-pigeon love and Vince a geezer fox, forever trying to lead Nelson astray.
Add to the mix cutaways, flashbacks, big show-stopping numbers and celebrity cameos (think Family Guy) and you have a bold, mischievous and surprisingly upbeat series that shows a mirror up to us. Shame then, that it was axed after two hit series.
