Stefan Gates is certainly one brave man. Not content with travelling to some of the most hostile places on the planet, he also finds time to sample some rather, shall we say, unusual dishes.
Stefan Gates' decision to trot around the world sampling local specialties sounds quite appealing, on paper. That is until you take a glance at the itinerary he's planned for his travels. Taking in Afghanistan, Chernobyl and Uganda, Stefan is willing to put his safety to the back of his mind in his quest to learn more about how people eat, and live, in some of the world's most volatile hotspots.
The self-proclaimed Gastronaut is certainly willing to try anything, and we mean anything, in the name of research. From Afghan sheep testicles to Korean dogs to radioactive soup, Stefan has a lot more on his mind than just expanding his tastebuds or causing those with a delicate disposition to recoil in horror.
Cooking in the Danger Zone isn't just a food show. At the heart of the series is Stefan's deep-seated desire to find out about the cultures and lifestyles of the places he visits. His attempts to sample the local cuisine without gagging is only ever the start of each adventure.
With that in mind, Stefan's visit to Afghanistan allows him to investigate the rebuilding of the nation, not to mention sitting down with a former Taliban leader. Likewise his experiences in Uganda reveal a lot more than the fact that life on UN rations isn't very appetising. Stefan's highway to the danger zone is well worth tucking into, if only to pick up tips on what to avoid serving at your next dinner party. Bon appétit.
