Top Gear was once the programme your dad would force everyone to watch - his quiet revenge for having to sit through your mum's frequent doses of Corrie or EastEnders. It was a serious, fact-filled car review show and therefore incredibly dull for anyone who a) couldn't care less about cars or b) wasn't your dad.
Then some bright spark realised the programme needed fewer reviews and more exploding caravans, and the new Top Gear was born - a show that bears as much resemblance to its predecessor as the Sex Pistols do to Genesis.
Viewers are divided on which presenter is the best - dads and lads like Clarkson, car geeks like James May, and (as long-suffering boyfriends well know) every single female viewer likes Richard Hammond. And everyone's got their favourite stunt - from "car darts" to the time they turned a Reliant Robin into a space shuttle. Genius.
